Applying Weed Control

Now that spring is here, it is time to think about how to control those pesky weeds in your lawn and in the flowerbeds. Let’s first talk about lawn weed control.

Spring is the best time to control most lawn weeds and it can be done at the same time as you fertilize your lawn. The major weeds you will have fall into two categories.

Broad leaf weeds

The broad leaf weeds are clover and dandelions and the grass is crab grass. These two weeds have to be controlled in different ways. If you have dandelions you can use any fertilizer that says Weed and Feed. These fertilizers work well and control dandelions and clover. They are available at any garden center. One note you should keep in mind when applying this weed control measure is that they will kill most flowers in the landscape so do not apply them to your flowers because they are broad leaf plants and the weed killer will kill them too.

Grasses

If you have crab grass and you want to control it, you must apply a fertilizer with crab grass killer. A good example of this is Scotts Fertilizer with Halts. You want to apply it now for best control and again in the middle of April with a second application. If you wait any later than that it may be to late. Once the crab grass germinates it is hard to control unless you go with a more expensive material called Drive. You may not want to use that option once you find out the cost.

Easy Step to Follow for Lawn Weed Control

  1. Use an aerator to aerate you lawn.
  2. Follow with thatching if you have not done this for several years.
  3. Mow up the thatch material or rake it up and remove it form your lawn.
  4. Apply the Weed and Feed for dandelion and clover control.
  5. Or Apply a Fertilizer with crab grass kill.
  • If you have dandelion, clover and grab grass control the crab grass first and then later in the spring kill the dandelion and clover.
  • One last note, you will find the cost of fertilizer a little more expensive this year than last and the reason is not that the store are wanting to make more money it is that the cost of natural gas which is the key ingredient that makes it cost more.

Places to buy weed control

Any garden center like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, ShopKo, Save Mart, or if you have a large lawn go to Wilbur Ellis. You will find commercial products and at a lower cost.
